Troubleshooting

Starting Like a Pro

Q1: I want to set myself up as a professional Web graphic designer. What tools are absolutely necessary to purchase?
A1: I would buy Photoshop and ImageStyler to start with. Then, I'd think about adding Macromedia Flash to my toolbox. If you're concerned about price and are currently a student, you can get student discounts from resellers. These can often be very significant. Educators can also get impressive discounts on software as well. Try before you buy. Download demos and work with them first—it's better to know you're going to use a program than spend good money for it only to find that it never gets used.

Photoshop a Necessity?

Q1: I am an ardent admirer of Jasc's Paint Shop Pro. I get excellent results with my Web graphics and am not interested in spending the money and time on Photoshop. Is this a problem?
A1: I've seen some awesome graphics created with Paint Shop Pro, and I'm convinced that any tool that meets your needs and makes you happy is the tool for you if you have no intention of attempting to look for work as a professional Web designer. If you do, the emphasis is very likely going to be on experience with professional tools from Adobe and Macromedia.
