Troubleshooting

Audience Is Paramount

Q1:I'm working on an intranet site and all the browsers used by individuals on the network are the most recent versions. Do I still have to subscribe to the HTML standard?
A1: If you know the exact nature of your audience, you are free to make decisions about the kinds of technology you want to use. For example, if you are using a style-sheet compliant browser across the network, you can freely use style sheets without having to include transitional information for other browsers. However, subscribing to the standard is, generally speaking, considered best practice.

Tracking Statistics

Q1:I want to track statistics for my Web site. How do I do this?
A1: The first place to look is to your ISP or network administrator to see if a statistical analysis program is available on the server. All Web servers log data, but often don't break it down into specific, usable chunks. Software programs on the server-side can do this comprehensively. If software of this nature is not available, see if you can encourage your ISP or administrator to add such software to the server.

If server statistics are simply not available to you, you can get statistical analysis services for no or low cost. Hitbox and Hitometer are two popular products that can give you comprehensive information about your site.
