Chapter 23. Understanding XHTML, XML, an... > XML: Fundamental Extensibility

XML: Fundamental Extensibility

As mentioned earlier in this chapter, it was XML that started this entire re-structuring of HTML. XML is a language of fundamental extensibility, giving both client- and server-side developers enormous power over their projects.

Note

XML support on the client-side is currently minimal. Internet Explorer 5.0 was the first XML support built into the browser. Most XML development is taking place on the server-side, although there is strong evidence that browser developers will have to aggressively incorporate XML and XHTML compatibility into their browsers.
