Chapter 29. Graphic Type for the Web > All About Digital Type

All About Digital Type

Type is generated from a series of electronic templates called fonts. There are literally thousands of typefaces available for digital graphics. A typeface designates a group of characters with a common set of characteristics, style, and proportions that make it a unique entity. A typeface can be rendered in any material: wood, metal, optically, or digitally.

The term type family pertains to groups of typefaces with common characteristics but visual variations. The weight, fill, and width are commonly varied within a family. For example, you may have a text bold or black weight, outline and solid fills, and narrow or extended width variations within the same family.
