Chapter 40. Designing Corporate Intranet... > Application Development: A Closer Lo...

Application Development: A Closer Look

When a given intranet is platform- and browser-dependent, the focus can be on technologies specific to the platform and browser. This doesn't make the developer's work easier, but it does refine the choices available. However, if there is diversity among the technology in use, the developer must be aware of cross-platform, cross-browser approaches.

Application development in intranets typically follows corporate development techniques and can work very smoothly if properly managed. It's interesting to point out that this smooth management doesn't often translate to what is going on in public Web site development—there has yet to be a major effort to bring defined development into the commercial Web development realm. This may be due to the fact that the development of intranets is an extension of existing corporate development rather than something perceived as a new venture, as is the case with many Web sites.
