Private Networks

The corporate intranet has quickly become the technology of choice for delivering timely business data within corporations and some smaller businesses. Just the other day, I was in the wireless store for a large phone utility. I noticed that they tracked purchases and accounts via their intranet, using Netscape as the interface. I asked the saleswoman about the intranet, and she told me that it was the only software in use—billing, inventory, service issues, orders—all the day-to-day operations of the company are handled in this fashion.

The importance and power of private networks is sometimes overlooked in the rush to create public sites. However, intranet (and the related extranet) technology makes up an enormous chunk of what Web developers do in their daily jobs.
