Troubleshooting

Forum Server Space

Q1:My forum is really taking off, which is great, but it's also causing me to exceed my server space allotment. What should I do?
A1: First of all, pat yourself on the back for building a successful community. Then you need to make some decisions. If your community can handle a change of venue, consider moving your forum to Delphi or another forum service to free up your server space for other content; you can link to the new forum from your site to maintain continuity.

Keep in mind, however, that you are apt to lose a small (or even large) percentage of your visitors by changing tools at this point in the game. A better option would be to increase your server space to handle your current and anticipated future traffic. If money is an issue, it might be time to explore the possibility of offering advertising space on your site to help cover your expenses.

Three Strike Rule

Q1:Some of the visitors to my forum keep coming back and causing trouble even after repeated warnings. How do I regain control?
A1: A good rule of thumb is the "three strike rule." After a first offense, send the user a warning. After the second offense, send a warning and a notice that if the behavior doesn't change, they'll be removed from the forum. After the third offense, follow through and lock the person out of your forum, either permanently or temporarily. Most forum packages have tools to track IP addresses and allow for banning of members.
