Troubleshooting

Troublesome Browsers

Q1:I've put together a style sheet and checked the syntax. The style is picked up by IE, but not Netscape 4.0. What's the problem?
A1: Netscape 4.0 is much less style-sheet-compliant than Microsoft IE 5.0 and earlier. Netscape 5.0 remedies much of these support concerns, but the version difference can be frustrating! The best recommendation I have is to not rely on style sheets if you want the best consistency for a wide range of even compliant browsers.

Cascade Woes

Q1:I've got a linked style sheet, an embedded style sheet, and an inline style set to cascade. Something isn't working right. How can I fix it?
A1: The best way to troubleshoot problems in a cascade is to comment out any embedded and inline style, and unlink from the linked style sheet. Test the page without any style. Are there any errors? If not, go ahead and add the inline style back in and test. Does it work? If so, add the embedded style sheet. Does the linked style override the embedded style that it's supposed to? If not, look carefully at your code for any errors. If so, go ahead and look at the page with the linked style only. If you are error free at this point, with no problems in either the HTML or CSS code, it's likely there is a compatibility or non-compliance issue with the browser you're using.
