Chapter 39. Building Business and e-Comm... > Planning Your Online Business

Planning Your Online Business

Often, you'll be building a Web site for a business that has existed for several years. In such a case, you (or they, if they're your client) should have a solid idea of the markets the business competes in, the products it produces or distributes, and who its major competitors are. These will all be key points when producing the business Web site—they'll act as a basis for your site design plan as well as provide ideas for content.

If the site you're constructing is for a new company that isn't yet in business or is just starting up, you've got a little research to do. What is the company going to provide—a product, a service, other people's products? Who else already does the same thing, and how can you present your message differently from them? And if nobody's doing the same thing, how can you make sure that all your customers know this—how can it be obvious in the way you market that company?
