Implementing an Indexing Search Engine

As you have learned from the previous discussion, implementing a grepping search engine can be quite easy. The discussion focused on only three popular Perl-based grepping engines, but many more are available with various features. Using the grepping approach represents a trade off between minimal disk usage and up-to-the-minute timeliness with high CPU usage and long elapsed times. You certainly can't beat the price (usually free) or the ease of setup and maintenance.

More sophisticated searching, however, is hard to implement using the grepping approach. For larger, more complex sites, an indexing search engine can be the best choice.
