Part: II Web Page Text > Text Alignment, Lists, and Special Characters

Hour 5. Text Alignment, Lists, and Special Characters

When you present information on paper (or with a good old-fashioned overhead projector), you probably often include lists of numbered steps or bullet points. You've also undoubtedly written many indented lists to organize information such as terms and their definitions or the outline of a business plan. Because lists are so common, HTML provides tags that automatically indent text and add numbers or bullets in front of each listed item.

In this hour, you find out how to center text and align it to the right side of the page. You also see how to format numbered and bulleted lists, and how the HTML tags for creating definition lists can also be used for almost any other type of indentation you want on your Web pages.

To do these things, you need a few more HTML tags. You also need to learn how to control optional settings (called attributes) for some of the tags you already know.

Finally, you will learn how to include characters in your HTML pages that cannot be placed directly. This technique can also be used to insert characters other than those in the English alphabet, and you will see how that is done.
