Creating the Tags of an XML File

Now that you understand the basics of XML as a metalanguage, we need to spend a moment on the names given to the tags in an XML file. They are subject to a set of rules similar to those for variable names in most programming languages:

  • No whitespace is allowed.

  • In general, punctuation characters cannot be used.

  • No reserved words can be used. For example, the word “script” is reserved to mean the opening of a section of script code. Attempting to use it for anything else would be confusing, even if it did not generate an error.

  • All tags should be in lowercase only.
