If you have done any reading about XML, you will have seen this phrase: “XML is a metalanguage used to describe data.” That statement tells you next to nothing about what a metalanguage does. Actually, you are very familiar with a metalanguage and have been since your first years of grade school.

A metalanguage is a language used to describe a language.
