Security and ActiveX Controls

One major problem that constantly recurs with ActiveX controls is that of security. When developed, the designers of ActiveX controls did not think through all the potential security problems. It is possible for ActiveX controls to perform destructive actions on your computer. Browsers can be set so that they pop up a warning dialog box to give you the option as to whether you want to allow an ActiveX control to run. The general rule is that if the control is from a site that is known and you really need what it does, allow it to work.

Security features were built into the Java language, with several levels of trust. At the most basic level, the applet runs in what is known as a “sandbox.” This means that all operations are the kind that can be erased without leaving any permanent results. Unfortunately, our world being the way it is, some holes in the security model have been found.
