Editing a Page with the Proper Encoding

Once a file is encoded, there’s no easy way to figure out which encoding was used. I haven’t seen a browser or text editor than can figure it out on its own. So, if you save a file with a particular encoding you have to manually open the file with that encoding in order to edit it. Otherwise, the characters that differ between your system’s default encoding and the encoding in which you originally saved the file will turn into garbage.
