Of Plugins and Players

Early Web browsers could show only black and white text, with no images. Netscape quickly put an end to that, adding internal support to their browser for color and images. But there are thousands of different kinds of files that a person might want to show in a Web page, including movies, sounds, even spreadsheets, just to mention a few. Instead of trying to add support for all of these files inside the browser, Netscape developed a system that matches the extension and MIME type of the desired file to an appropriate piece of software—a helper application or player—outside the browser.
