Using (Mostly) Browser Safe Colors

As I discussed earlier (see page 84), if you want to avoid dithering on 8-bit monitors, you should restrict the colors in GIF or PNG-8 images to the Web-safe palette. However, if you limit yourself to those 216 colors, it’s hard to create the soft, anti-aliased edges which make text look half decent. A compromise is in order: get rid of dither in big areas of flat color areas, while being less strict with edges.
