Chapter 5. Creating Web Images > Saving Images with Transparency

Saving Images with Transparency

Once you’ve created transparency in an image, you can save the image as either a GIF or PNG to preserve the transparency in the Web page.

To save images with transparency

1.
In the Save For Web window, choose the GIF or PNG-8 format.

2.
Click Transparency (Figure 5.15).

Figure 5.15. Once you’re satisfied with the image that contains transparent areas, choose File > Save for Web, choose a format that supports transparency (GIF or PNG) and then click the Transparency box.

3.
If you know the color of the background upon which the image will be placed (that will shine through the transparent areas), choose that color in the Matte menu (Figure 5.16). The pixels that are partially transparent will be blended with the Matte color to make a smooth transition from the image to the background.

Figure 5.16. If you know the color of the background upon which the image will go, select it in the Matte menu. This will create a smooth transition between the image and the background color.

If you don’t know the background color, choose None in the Matte pop-up menu. This creates a hard border, converting pixels that are 50% or more transparent to fully transparent and pixels that are less than 50% transparent to fully opaque.

4.
Click OK and give the file a name.
