Appendix B. Special Symbols

You can type any letter of the English alphabet or any number into your HTML document and be confident that every other computer system will interpret it correctly. However, if your Web page contains any accents, foreign characters, or special symbols, you may have to use a special code to make sure they appear correctly on the page.

The ISO Latin-1 character set is the standard for the World Wide Web. It assigns a number to each character, number, or symbol in the set. In addition, some characters, especially the accented letters, have special names.
