Chapter 14. Setting up Style Sheets > Creating an External Style Sheet

Creating an External Style Sheet

External style sheets are ideal for giving all the pages on your Web site a common look. Instead of getting their styles from individual internal style sheets, you can set each page to consult the external sheet, thus ensuring that each will have the same settings.

To create an external style sheet:

1.
Create a new text document.

2.
Type the name of the tag whose properties you wish to define (H1, P, or whatever).

3.
Type { to mark the beginning of this tag's properties.

4.
Define as many properties as desired for this tag, using the steps described on pages 257–289. Separate each property with a semicolon.

5.
Type } to mark the end of this tag's properties.

6.
Repeat steps 2–5 for each tag for which you wish to define properties.

7.
Save the document in Text Only format in the desired directory. Give the document the extension .css to designate the document as a Cascading Style Sheet.
