Chapter 12. Multimedia > Creating a RealMedia Metafile

Creating a RealMedia Metafile

A link or embedded RealMedia file does not point to the file itself, but rather to a file that points to the RealMedia file. The intermediary file is called a metafile and is simply a text file that lists the path of one or more RealMedia files.

To create a metafile:

1.
With your text editor, create a new blank file.

2.
At the very top, type http://www.your-server.com/path/realmediafile.rm, where http://www.yourserver.com/path is the path to the directory on your server that contains the RealMedia files you created in step 5 on page 226 and realmediafile.rm is the actual name of the RealMedia file.

3.
Repeat step 2 for each RealMedia sound that you want to play.

4.
If you want to have the sound played in an independent RealMedia helper application (called RealPlayer), save the file as Text Only with the .ram extension.

Or, if you want the console embedded in the page, save the metafile as Text Only with the .rpm extension.
