Helper Applications and Plug-ins

Browsers are generally limited to displaying HTML, text, GIF, and JPEG files in the browser window. When a browser comes across any other kind of file—a strange image format, a sound or video, even an Excel file—it relies on two kinds of support: plug-ins and external helper applications.

You must use the proper extension for each file so that the browser knows what to do with it. The system of standardized extensions is known as MIME— Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (see Table 12.1).
