Chapter 19. Extras > Creating Drop Caps

Creating Drop Caps

Some of the best tricks are the simplest. Since you can't always be sure which fonts your visitors have installed, you can create an image file of the capital letter, make it transparent, and insert it before the rest of the paragraph.

To create a drop cap:

1.
In an image editing program, create the capital letter for your drop cap in the desired font. Save it in GIF format and make it transparent (see pages 64 and 70).

2.
In your HTML document where you want the drop cap to appear, type <IMG SRC="dropcap.gif" where dropcap.gif is the location on the server of the image created in step 1.

3.
TypeALIGN=left so that the text that follows wraps around the drop cap.

4.
Type the final > to finish the IMG definition.

5.
Type the text that should appear next to the drop cap. Generally, next to a drop cap, it is a good idea to type the first few words in all caps.
