Chapter 19. Extras > Creating a Counter

Creating a Counter

It's nice to know that folks have been stopping by to see your masterpiece, once it's up and running. Many people use a special CGI script called a counter to tally each visit. Although CGI scripts are a bit beyond the scope of this book, I can point you in the right direction.

To create a counter:

1.
First, contact your ISP. Ask them if they allow counters. If they do, they'll probably have a FAQ page that explains how to add one to your site.

2.
If your ISP allows CGI scripts but doesn't have a ready-made counter, you can write your own. If you don't program, try The CGI-Resources Web Site: http://www.cgiresources.com/ (the hyphen is part of the address).

3.
Finally, you can use a public counter. Like other "free" services, you pay for this type of counter by including advertising on your site. You might try a service like Pagecount (http://www.pagecount.com) or do a search on AltaVista for other "free" counters.
