Chapter 19. Extras > Password Protecting Your Page

Password Protecting Your Page

Don't like the idea of just anyone visiting your page? Certainly the easiest way to keep people out is to not tell them the page exists. However, most servers also let you protect directories (but not individual pages) with a password. Then you can limit access to the pages within those directories by limiting who you give the password to. To create a separate password for each person, you need a CGI script, but I'm afraid that's a bit beyond the scope of this book—even in the Extras chapter. The other limitation of this method is that it only works on certain servers. If it doesn't work for you, consult your ISP!

To password protect your page:

1.
Telnet to your server.

2.
Navigate to the directory that you wish to protect with a password.

3.
Type htaccess.

4.
Type the user name at the prompt.

5.
Type the password at the next prompt. Then type it again to confirm.
