  • Alpha channel support (p. 302–303) A great new feature of the Flash Player’s new video codec is support for a real alpha channel at run-time. This new capability provides the unique ability to overlay video composited with a transparent (even semi-transparent) alpha channel over other Flash content. With this capability Flash users can create dynamic presentations such as a splashing water, smoke and fire effects, as well as presenters shot in front of a blue screen.

  • Encoding On2 advanced settings (p. 300–301, 482–483) Flash 8 Professional includes a new, advanced video encoder that provides an easy way to convert video files into the Flash Video (FLV) format and allows developers to optimize quality and file size of their video content. The encoder is available within Flash as a plug-in to professional video editing tools and as a separate stand-alone application. The encoder also allows you to perform batch processing of video files.

  • FLV Encoder (p. 482–483) The Macromedia Flash 8 Video Encoder (a stand-alone application) provides advanced encoding options for creating Flash video files using either the new, high-quality On2 VP6 codec or the Sorenson Sparc codec available since Flash Player 6. This encoder also includes a batch-processing capability that lets developers encode multiple video files at once.

  • FLV QuickTime Export Plugin (p. 300–301) Export video directly to Macromedia Flash from within leading professional video-editing and encoding tools such as Avid Xpress/Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro, Discreet Cleaner, and Anystream Agility. The Flash Video Exporter provides FLV video export capabilities to all applications on the desktop simultaneously.

  • Embedded cue points (p. 300–301, 482–483) Embed cue points directly into your Flash video (FLV) file so events can be triggered dynamically during playback. Used in conjunction with the new Flash video component, designers can easily coordinate the playback of accompanying graphics and animations when individual cue points are reached.

  • Video work flow improved (p. 286–287) The Import Video wizard has been improved to help you deploy video content for embedded, progressively downloaded, and streaming video delivery. You can import video stored locally on your computer, or video already deployed to a Web server or Flash Communication Server.
