Introduction

Flash is an application for developing rich content, user interfaces, and Web applications. Macromedia Flash MX 2004 allows designers and developers to integrate video, text, audio, and graphics into rich experiences that deliver superior results for interactive marketing and presentations, e-learning, and application user interfaces. Most major commercial Web sites have implemented Flash content because of its cross-platform consistency, rich graphics capabilities, and small file sizes. After you create and fine-tune multimedia content in Flash, you can deliver it on the Web within a browser using the Flash Player. Flash Player is a software product developed by Macromedia for browsers on the Macintosh and Windows. Flash is the world's most pervasive software platform, used by over one million professionals and reaching more than 97% of Web-enabled desktops worldwide, as well as a wide range of consumer electronic devices, such as PDAs and mobile phones.

Macromedia Flash MX 2004 comes in two editions: Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004. Flash MX 2004 is a subset of the Professional edition. Flash MX Professional 2004 edition has all the same features included in the standard edition. However, the Professional edition also contains additional features that are geared towards creating more sophisticated interactive content, rich Internet applications, professional quality video, and easy deployment to devices. A complete description of Flash MX 2004 new features for both versions appears in the New Features guide in the back of this book.
