Chapter 8. Using Sound > Synchronizing Sounds

Synchronizing Sounds

It is important to realize that sound is time-based, not frame-based like animation. Sound is delivered at a steady rate; it must be delivered this way to be able to preserve the integrity of the sound. Change the delivery speed, and you change the frequency, which produces a different sound. This is in sharp contrast to animation, which can start, stop, and jump among frames.

So, how can you synchronize sound to animation, when the two operate so differently? There is no way to precisely and seamlessly sync sound and visuals as you can with a sound track embedded in a filmstrip. The most you can do is place sounds where they need to occur, and work to optimize your sound delivery.
