Chapter 11. Getting Started with ActionS... > Understanding Object-Oriented Langua...

Understanding Object-Oriented Languages

ActionScript is an object-oriented programming (OOP) language. For approximately the last 40 years, OOP has been gaining ground as the programming paradigm of choice. In this chapter, I’ll explain why and give some simple examples. Later chapters, starting with Chapter 15, go into more detail.

Chapter 15, “Combining Statements into Functions,” introduces the basic object-oriented programming (OOP) concept of classes in “Functions as Classes: Constructor Functions,” page 279. Most subsequent chapters show you how to use built-in objects and/or discuss issues around creating custom objects.
