Chapter 22. Components > Creating a New Component

Creating a New Component

So far, you have looked at the built-in components that come with Flash MX. You might have noticed that they are all Form fields, which you can edit to suit the needs of your forms. However, components can be whatever you need them to be—programmable buttons, form fields, through to faders and shapes that you want control over, or as you will learn here, any type of element that you may want to use over again with different parameters. Check out the component buttons in the Flash Library to see one of these components at work.

In this section, you create a rectangle that has programmable options to change the height and width. There is no such thing as the right component to create, so for purposes of demonstrating the process, you will create a rectangle that has the following changeable properties: width, height, tint, and an additional option that allows control over whether the tint is applied.
