Chapter 6. Wrestling with the Drawing Ca... > Troubleshooting the Drawing Canvas

Troubleshooting the Drawing Canvas

  • Elements that are not objects—shapes or lines—will not respond to the arrange commands under Modify in the main menu. To change the order of these elements, select the shape or line, and then select Modify, Group. This converts the shape to an object, and it can now be adjusted on the layer relative to other objects.

  • If you are making changes to a symbol in the Library, but one of your instances in the movie is not changing, you might have inadvertently run Break Apart on the symbol instance. This command severs links between the instance and its master symbol, in effect creating a new object. You must replace the instance with a new one from the Library. Severing links to master symbols also increases file size. Break Apart also reduces animated symbols to a single frame, converts bitmaps to fills, and converts text to single, outlined objects. If you didn't intend to affect your objects in this way, use the Ungroup command under Modify in the main menu.

  • Making a change to a master symbol's center point also affects all the instances in your movie. If you previously made a center-point shift to a single instance and then a change to the master, Flash recalculates the instance's center-point shift relative to the new master symbol center.
