Chapter 8. Working with Vector Art > Importing Vector Art into Flash

Importing Vector Art into Flash

Importing vector art into Flash proved to be challenging for the early users of Flash. Fortunately, today a sufficient development community has adopted Flash as a standard for Web animation, and as a result, other software vendors have fallen into line, creating Flash-compatible utilities. Programs such as Adobe Illustrator did not previously export vector artwork that Flash could translate effectively. Now, Adobe Illustrator 8.0 owners can download a free Flash Writer plug-in from the Macromedia Web site. This utility gives Illustrator the capacity to export directly to the Flash format. Version 9.0 of Illustrator also has the capability to export to SWF without requiring a plug-in.

This capability to bring in vector art from other applications enables you to use familiar software environments to develop your artwork and still apply them in Flash, instead of creating them from scratch inside the Flash authoring environment.
