Troubleshooting Bitmaps

  • After cleaning unused bitmap and sound files out of your movie, you might find that the .FLA file size does not drop. The immediate fix is to perform a Save As and select a different filename. Remove the old file and use your new file as the master.

  • During playback, bitmaps can appear different from what they do in the authoring environment. Also they can, on occasion, appear to jump or fidget by about one pixel. Usually, this occurs in conjunction with a tween (see Chapter 11). Try changing the Bitmap properties in the Library. Turn off Allow Smoothing and see whether this produces better results. Another potential solution is to use the Break Apart command on the bitmap, either as an object on the stage or inside a symbol. Also, try making very small scaling adjustments to the image or, in the event of an Alpha shift, tiny changes in the progression.

  • If your graphic symbol has gone blank, you might want to verify whether it was created from a previously imported bitmap. A symbol created from an imported bitmap also must have that symbol in the library; otherwise, it will appear blank.

  • If Flash is crashing during an animated GIF Export (File, Export Movie from the main menu), try the Publish Movie command instead of the export and select animated GIF as your output preference.
