Did You Know?

One of the least understood capabilities of Flash is that movies can send and retrieve text data from servers. Projectors also can read text files stored on the local hard drive.

The advantage of reading external data is that a movie's operation can be modified in many ways by changing parameters controlled by variables. When variables can be changed by editing a text file, it means that someone who doesn't know how to program in Flash can modify how the movie works. All he needs to do is use a text editor. It also means that the movie can change based on queries from a database or the results of a server-side script.

Flash provides four basic methods of data transfer: encoding data in the movie URL, loading variables, using the XML object, and using XML sockets.
