Chapter 23. Custom Objects > Using Object Inheritance

Using Object Inheritance

Objects that are similar can share property definitions and methods by using a feature known in programming circles as inheritance. If you're familiar with the prototype property in JavaScript, you're familiar with the prototype property in ActionScript because they work in very similar ways.

With inheritance, new properties and methods can be dynamically added to an object that is already defined. The properties and methods can be defined outside the object definition, making them available to other objects. The functionality of an object property or method can be changed during the course of a movie's playback.
