Chapter 5. Creating Symbols > Troubleshooting Symbols

Troubleshooting Symbols

  • You might find that symbols showing up in a Library can't be edited, and that the New Symbol and New Folder options are dimmed. This is because you are using a library from a Flash movie that isn't currently opened or active. It might be that you selected File, Open As Library from the main menu or are currently working in another file. In this case, the library is read-only. You must either open the Flash file with the original Library inside to edit these elements or use the Window menu to navigate to the file to which the Library belongs. However, whenever you place a symbol from another library on the stage, Flash does put a copy of the symbol in the current movie.

  • Changes to symbols in shared libraries are not reflected in your main movie during editing mode. Either play back the movie to see the revisions or replace the older versions with the current ones.

  • Some Mac users with OS9 reportedly find they cannot drag items out of their Flash libraries onto the stage. To potentially solve the problem, use File, Find to open Sherlock and select Find, More Options. Look at Advanced Options and click Is Invisible. Click OK. Search for a file or folder named Drag. Delete this file and restart your machine.

  • Some movie clips in mask layers might not use the clip when it is applied as a masked object. The problem develops because Flash converts movie clips in mask layers to graphic symbols when the Flash file is published. Only the bottom layer shows up as the masking shape; other layers are not applied. The solution is to combine all the layers into one single layer.

  • You are having trouble removing a symbol from the stage. Make sure you haven't inadvertently locked down the layer or that particular symbol. Check the layer icons to see whether a lock appears in that particular layer. Or select Modify, Arrange, Unlock All to release any elements you previously might have locked down (to do this, select the items and select Modify, Arrange, Lock). There is nothing magical about symbols versus other stage objects. They should generally behave just like any other element.
