Did You Know?

  • Use shapes to cut out patterns in other shapes instead of trying to carve out patterns using the Pen tool or the eraser. Drag one shape over the other, and then deselect everything. Reselect the cutting shape and press the Delete key.

  • Use shape recognition to draw basic geometric shapes with the Pencil tool. The feature lets you develop complex scenes quickly with the same motion as a sketchpad. Various levels for shape recognition can be set by selecting Edit, Preferences from the main menu, clicking the Editing tab, and selecting an option from the drop-down box labeled Recognize Shapes.

  • Remember that one shape overlapping another one that is a different color will punch out the area on the bottom object. If you remove the top object, the bottom one is modified. Put shapes on different layers to keep from punching out segments or combining shapes together.

  • When using certain fonts, if it is possible for your project, apply the same rule used in print: Always start at the end. Find out which fonts are supported on the platform, and then you can make decisions up front on how to prepare your final movies.

  • If your font treatment has to be absolutely perfect, you should set up the text in a program such as Illustrator and then import it after you have created outlines.

  • When you draw a shape such as a circle or square, remember the stroke and the fill are considered two separate elements. To combine these elements into a single object, select both elements with the Arrow tool on the main toolbar, and then select Modify, Group from the main menu.
