Did You Know?

One of the most important additions to Flash 5 is a feature called smart clips. A smart clip is a movie clip that has been designed to enable people putting together the Flash movie to determine how a movie clip instance behaves without doing any scripting.

With smart clips, an ActionScript programmer can create a general-purpose movie clip with custom parameter names and then hand it over to designers. The designers can use the clip to modify the behavior of each individual instanceby changing the values of the custom parameters—the text it displays, how it moves, what images appear, and so on—simply by typing into a panel.

For complex smart clips, you can even create custom interfaces that can change the smart clips'parameter values. Instead of typing numbers, the designers set values through a visual interface, which is itself another Flash movie.
