Chapter 27. Browser Scripting > Understanding the FSCommand System

Understanding the FSCommand System

The FSCommand system enables the Flash movie to not only send commands (as it does to the Flash player), but also receive commands via a set of methods. This interaction can be as simple as having the Flash movie change the color of the HTML document or as complex as having the HTML set the properties of a Flash object. The result is a more seamless integration of Flash and HTML, but be prepared for a little extra effort.

Essentially, JavaScript code written into the HTML page will have functions prepared to either "toss" or "catch" instructions to or from the Flash movie. The FSCommand system is the silver platter that carries those instructions with the intent of making the com- munication failsafe and predictable. When receiving commands, the JavaScript function DoFSCommand in invoked to implement the command and arguments intercepted from the Flash movie. When sending commands, the JavaScript uses a set of methods the Flash plug-in understands.
