Overview of Components and Their Use in Macromedia Flash

A component is a movie clip with defined clip parameters that can be edited. Components provide a way to isolate and encapsulate complex interactivity into a special movie clip symbol just as the smart clip did in Flash 5.0. But unlike smart clips, components are intelligent and now can be modified through ActionScript. To understand this new intelligence that has been added to a component, a comparison with smart clips is necessary. For instance, if you were to resize a smart clip, it would be distorted, but the new intelligence of a component enables the component to be resized, keeping the original proportions intact.

Seven preset Flash UI (user interface) components ship with Flash. These components are stored in the Components panel (see Figure 8.1). You can access the Components panel through the Window, Component menu command.
