Transparent Buttons and Their Use in Macromedia Flash

Another nice feature of buttons and their use in Flash is the transparent button. This type of button is the equivalent of an image map that is used in HTML development. It basically is a button with all button functionality, but it does not have an image in the Up, Over, or Down state of the button. It does, however, have a shape in the Hit state. This shape defines the hot spot area, and because there isn’t another image in the other states, it appears transparent, allowing the Stage content behind it to show through (see Figure 7.3). You will create transparent buttons in the workshops throughout this book.

Figure 7.3. This figure shows an example of using transparent buttons that define hot spots on a bitmap image of desktop icons.
