Seminar 7. Site Interactivity and Button... > Combining Movie Clips with Buttons

Combining Movie Clips with Buttons

A fun effect to add to a button is using animation in the Over state. Buttons can morph from one shape to another, or they can show a progression of movement or color effects through the animation. This is accomplished using a movie clip instance in the Over state of a button. A movie clip has its own Timeline that exists outside the movie Timeline. Because the movie clip Timeline is independent of the movie Timeline, the movie clip animation can be played regardless of the movie Timeline. Any type of movie clip that you can create can be added to a button state. To look at a sample movie of a button that has a movie clip in the Over state, open file button_final.fla, which you’ll find in the Seminar07/Samples directory on the CD-ROM that accompanies this book.

The button_final.fla movie has one button on the Stage. To see this button in action, test it in the Flash Player Testing Mode by selecting Control, Test Movie. Notice that the button has a simple design of a gray rectangle background and a text label. This is the button’s Up state image. When you roll your mouse over the button, it plays a movie clip displaying the button background morphing to three rectangles. This is the button’s Over state. Close the Flash Player Testing Mode to return to the movie.
