Seminar 16. Publishing and Testing the Site > The Power of the Publish Command

The Power of the Publish Command

Up to this point in the book, you have been using the Macromedia Flash Authoring Mode and the Flash Player Testing Mode to test your movies. Now you will learn how to publish a movie for Internet viewing. This requires the use of the Publish command of Flash MX: File, Publish. You’ll find that this command is very powerful and helpful. As you know from Seminar 1, “Macromedia Flash MX and Web Site Development,” for a Flash movie to be viewed in a browser, it should be embedded in an HMTL page or another server-side scripting language. The beauty of the Publish command is that through it, you can generate many different formats of your movie as well as create the HTML page required for playback in a Web browser. This seminar covers how to publish your movie for Internet viewing.

Publishing Macromedia Flash MX Movies

When you have your movie developed, the final step is to publish or export the Flash FLA movie to another format for playback. Throughout this book, you have been testing your movies in the Flash Player testing mode, but to deliver your movie to an audience, you must generate a format of the movie for playback on the platform in which it will be delivered. This requires setting the appropriate publish settings and publishing the movie. You set your publish settings through the File, Publish Settings command. This command opens the Publish Settings dialog box (see Figure 16.1). By default, it is set to generate an SWF file of the movie as well as the HMTL document in which the SWF file is embedded.
