Seminar 14. Dynamic ActionScript for Con... > Building the Slider Puzzle Activity

Building the Slider Puzzle Activity

Like every project, big or small, you need to determine what the goals of the project are and how you plan to accomplish those goals, all before you begin programming. The slider puzzle activity is a game based on moving numbered tiles into sequential order within a rectangular area. I am sure that many of you are familiar with this concept and have probably played with a real-world version of the game at some point. This will hopefully make the game easier to understand and build.

This game will be played on a 3×3 grid, with 9 total spaces. It will have 8 tiles, numbered 1–8, and an empty slot to allow for the movement of the tiles. The user will move and rearrange the tiles by clicking. When clicked, a tile will move only if the empty space is either to the left, right, top, or bottom of the tile being clicked. All this functionality is created in one frame of the puzzles.fla movie that you created in Seminar 7, “Site Interactivity and Button Functionality.” You will do this through ActionScript, movie clips, and button symbols.
