Overview of Other Tools

As you work through this book, you will have an opportunity to work with many of the tools and modifiers. This seminar does not go into detail on all the other tools in the toolbox because you will learn how to use most of them as you work through the workshops in each seminar. Table 3.2 provides information on the other Flash tools and their modifier settings. Practice using the tools with various modifier settings.

Tool Tool Name Options Area Modifier Settings

Subselect tool No Option settings.

Lasso tool Magic Wand—Selects color areas of broken-apart bitmap graphics based on Magic Wand settings.

Magic Wand Properties—Settings for selecting colors based on how close the colors are in their color values as well as whether they are next to each other in an image.

Polygon Mode—Toggle button for selecting either by freehand or by a polygon shape.

Pen tool No Option settings.

Text tool No Option settings.

Pencil tool Pencil Mode—Sets a drawing mode for creating objects. There are three settings: Straighten, Smooth, and Ink.

Brush tool Brush Mode—Paints with different effects selecting one of the five menu choices.

Brush Size—Sets the size of the brush.

Brush Style—Sets the style of the brush.

Lock Fill—Locks a gradient fill to flow across multiple objects on the Stage.

Free Transform Tool Rotate and Skew—Rotates and skews the selected object.

Scale—Modifies an object’s height and width.

Distort—Distorts an object’s shape.

Envelope—Warps and distorts an object’s shape. This modifier works only on objects that are in their basic forms. This modifier does not work on grouped shapes or symbols, or on bitmaps, sounds, gradients, text, or video objects.

Fill Transform Tool No Option settings.

Ink Bottle tool No Option settings.

Paint Bucket tool Gap Size—Offers three settings for gap size. If a hole or gap exists in the line of a shape, you can still fill the area based on the setting you select from the Gap Size menu. Lock Fill—Locks a gradient fill to flow across multiple objects on the Stage.

Dropper tool No modifier settings.

Eraser tool Eraser Mode—Erases with different effects selecting one of the five menu choices.

Faucet—Pulls out fills or line colors with one click in the area.

Eraser Size—Sets the size of the eraser.

Hand tool No modifier settings.

Zoom tool Enlarge—Increases magnification of the Stage by twice the current setting. Reduce—Decreases magnification of the Stage by one-half the current setting.
