Understanding How Lines and Shapes Interact

With the concepts of design in mind, it is now time to learn more about Flash and its design tools. Flash has many of the tools and design features that you might be accustomed to in other graphics applications. But Flash behaves a little differently when it comes to objects, fills, and lines. Because Flash is a vector-based program, objects in their basic forms are composed of lines and/or fills. When an object intersects another object, the overlapping fills and lines merge and become one. Anytime a line intersects with another line, it breaks into separate line segments at the point of intersection. You use clicking and double-clicking to select an entire object or part of the object. To understand this better, open the sample file merge.fla on the CD-ROM in the Seminar3/Samples directory. Then perform the following steps:

Open the merge.fla file by select File, Open. The file opens with an oval and a rectangle on the Stage. The oval overlaps, as well as displays on top of, the rectangle.

Select the Arrow tool from the toolbox and click the fill area of the oval. A marquee appears in the fill area indicating that it is selected (see Figure 3.7). The oval is composed of both a stroke and a fill.

Click one of the rectangle’s lines. Notice that instead of selecting the entire outline of the rectangle, you select only one line segment of the rectangle (see Figure 3.8).

To select the entire oval, including both the fill and the stroke, double-click anywhere in the fill.

To select the entire stroke of the oval, click the line segment of the oval.

Also note that the oval object has merged with the rectangle shape in the area in which they overlap. With the Arrow tool, select the entire oval by double-clicking, and then move the object. The oval has merged with the rectangle (see Figure 3.9).
