Using a Sound Toggle Button in a Movie

If you are a Web surfer, I am sure you have visited a site that has background music that continues to play and play and play—basically annoying you and causing a quick exit from the site. You should always use a sound toggle button in any movie that has streaming background music. This button enables the visitor to turn the music off, thus giving him control over his viewing experience and keeping him at the site.

Through the use of buttons and movie clips, a sound toggle button can be implemented in a movie. To view an example of a sound toggle button, from the CD-ROM that accompanies this book, open the file sound_example.fla in the Seminar12/Samples directory. When this movie opens, there is a button on the Stage. Test the movie and notice that when the movie loads, a sound is playing. If you click the button that is now labeled Music Off, the sound stops. The button label changes to indicate that if pressed again, you can turn the music back on. Click the button again and the music begins to play again. This is a toggle button for turning the music on or off. Exit the Flash Player to return to the movie in the Flash Authoring Mode.
