Chapter 6. Tips for Using the Library > Using Shared Libraries

Using Shared Libraries

New to Flash 5 is the capability to share assets among multiple movies through the use of Shared Libraries. You can use Shared Libraries to share symbols, fonts, and sounds across an entire site. It sounds like a pretty cool concept, but there are some issues you have to be aware of if you plan on using Shared Libraries:

  • If a Shared Library is corrupted or missing, your movie, the one that is depending on using the shared symbols, does not function. It simply stops—dead in the water.

  • If you make a change to a symbol in the Shared Library, that change is not reflected in the FLAs of any file that links to the Shared Library—unless you take a few extra steps. Changes made to a symbol in a Shared Library are reflected in the SWF files of the linked movies only.
