Chapter 8. Navigation > Thinking Buttons and Navigation

Thinking Buttons and Navigation

In addition to its original humble beginnings as a symbol, the Flash Pro button now has a Button class as well as a Button component. Buttons have long alerted users to the fact that they are something special by their ability to change when the mouse moves over their hit area. However, in more sophisticated rich Internet applications (RIAs), buttons often need to provide more information to the user in a navigation context, whether by appearing selected or having a changed status. In the following subsections, the discussion focuses on ways to use buttons in navigation and the Flash Pro capabilities related to button use.

Simple Button Navigation

The simplest navigation is one where clicking a button jumps the user to a different frame. By placing the menu in a separate layer, you can cause all the keyframes containing unique materials to employ a common set of menu buttons. Figure 8.1 shows a simple setup with six buttons. Each of the buttons, when clicked, stops the movie at a different keyframe.
