Using the String Class to Format Text

Strings are nothing more than characters treated as text. They are not words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs. Think of strings as different arrangements of characters—spaces, numbers, punctuation marks, even graphic characters in specialized fonts such as Webdings—and you'll find that working with the String class makes a lot more sense.

The String class in ActionScript 2.0 contains a single property and only a dozen methods, but it's an extremely important class. Several previous chapters have shown examples incorporating String class methods. This section covers the key uses of the String class we haven't yet examined.
